Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, located on Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast, has a unique and diverse history that sets it apart from the rest of the country. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Bribri people, the area has long been a center of native culture and traditions, many of which are still alive today in nearby indigenous reserves.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Afro-Caribbean immigrants, mainly from Jamaica, settled in the region to work on banana plantations and in the development of the coastal railway. For much of its early history, Puerto Viejo remained isolated due to a lack of roads and infrastructure. It was a quiet fishing village until the late 20th century, when improvements in transportation opened it up to tourism. Since then, it has evolved into a popular destination known for its relaxed vibe, multicultural roots, and natural beauty—offering a rich mix of history, tradition, and tropical adventure.
